Living with Hypertension

+THE BASICS
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common condition among older adults, in which the force of blood flow through the artery of the heart is very high. When the blood pressure is above the 140/90 (normal range is 120/80), the person is considered to be suffering from hypertension. Aging, obesity, physical inactivity, family history, smoking or drinking habits, high salt or high fat diet, mental stress, and diabetes are some of the risk factors for high blood pressure. It generally does not show any symptoms but increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, aneurysm, kidney disease etc. High blood pressure is usually found in adults above 40 years. If the blood pressure reaches 180/110, the patient needs immediate medical attention.
+MANAGING YOUR DAY
Regular exercise, weight loss, healthy diet, proper sleep, stress relief and medication are the best ways to manage hypertension. Balanced diet low in salt, lowering alcohol and caffeine intake are necessary to maintain a steady normal pressure. A blood pressure monitor is essential to check your blood pressure regularly. The heart rate monitor helps to monitor your blood pressure as well as daily activity and calories burnt. Classical music therapy has been known to relieve stress which in turn lowers high blood pressure.
