Living with Osteoporosis?

+THE BASICS
Osteoporosis (porous bone) is a disease characterized by low bone density and damage of bone tissue which increases the risk of fracture, sprain and injuries. Bone density decreases after 35 years of age and bone loss occur more rapidly in women after menopause. Other risk factors are genetics, lack of exercise, low calcium and vitamin D levels, personal history of fracture as an adult, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and history of rheumatoid arthritis. Weakened bones may break under minor degree of stress. Most common fractures due to fragility occur in the vertebral column, rib, hip and wrist.
+MANAGING YOUR DAY
Medication, weight-bearing endurance exercises, healthy diet (low in sugar, carbs, and fat) can help in the management of osteoporosis. Moderate aerobic exercise 5 days a week improves bone health. Daily exposure to sunlight for around an hour can improve Vitamin D level in the body that strengthens the bones. It is important to be extra cautious in wet or highly polished zones or other places that might cause accidental falls and fractures. Caregivers should pay constant attention to elderly patients to prevent accidents. Non-slip shoes, anti-slip floor polish, tapes, and grab rails may be useful in this case. Mobility aids like walking sticks, walkers ensure safety while walking. Browse products which make daily living easier for osteoporotic individuals.
