Living with quadriplegia?

+THE BASICS
Paralysis of all fours limbs, i.e. two legs and two hands, is called Quadriplegia. This is also popularly known as Tetraplegia. Neck injuries causing damage to the spinal cord can result in this condition, which may be partial or complete, based on the severity. Secondary symptoms associated with Quadriplegia are blood clots and bedsores due to immobility, poor bladder and bowel control, respiratory problems, loss of sensation, spastic muscles, pain, depression etc.
+MANAGING YOUR DAY
Although there is no definitive treatment for the condition, medication sometimes helps to relieve pain and other related symptoms. A surgery may be helpful in reducing the pressure on the spinal cord; however, it may not reverse the condition completely. Physical therapy also assists in improving the condition, while rehabilitation aids in learning the ways to live better with the limitation. Please consult your physician for the available treatment options. Assistive devices may also help in increasing the independence of the patient – such as a wheelchair, voice-activated lights, electronic appliances, and inflatable pads under the limbs for enabling movement, among others. Using the toilet often becomes very difficult for quadriplegic patients. Adult diapers and underpads, as well as foldable commode chairs, can solve this issue while providing relief to the caregivers.
