Varicose Veins

Living with Varicose Veins

+THE BASICS
Varicose veins or spider veins are enlarged, swollen, and twisting veins often appearing blue or dark purple. Veins in the legs work against gravity to return deoxygenated blood to the heart. With age, the valves of the veins may weaken and hence blood often flows backward instead of flowing towards the heart. As a result, blood accumulates in the veins and they become swollen and blue in appearance. Veins in legs and feet are most commonly affected. The condition is very common in older adults.
+MANAGING YOUR DAY
Management of varicose veins can be done with medication, elastic supports and compression devices, weight loss exercises, resting your legs by avoiding standing and elevating the affected area. In severe stages, bulging veins require immediate surgical intervention. Assistive products like compression braces, wraps, and firm support stockings ensure proper blood flow. Heating pads, infrared massagers help to improve the blood circulation in the area and relieve pain. Foot bubble spa, foot warmer relieves the stress on your leg muscles. If your walking ability is affected due to varicose veins, walking sticks can be helpful. Anti-slip mats and tapes save you from accidental slips and falls in wet or polished zones.
